The Cover Letter: It Matters

Writing a good cover letter matters in a job search
Oh the cover letter . Some of us dread writing them, the rest of us love it. But one thing’s for sure: it’s an absolute necessity when applying for a job or an internship . This is true anywhere in the world. The cover letter affords you the opportunity to express yourself in a way you simply can’t in a resume . Resumes are structured and predictable. Cover letters aren’t. The cover letter is also the first impression you’ll give a potential employer, so you’ll want it to be good. Cover Letters Equal Expression Lisa McQuery of Demand Media believes that cover letters matter because of the way they enable job applicants to set themselves apart from the rest of the pack. She explains that the introductory portion of a cover letter “can be used to express a genuine interest in aspects of the company to which [the applicant] is applying...

Intern Testimonial: Alex Roberts

Alex Roberts and his China internship program with Getin2China
For Alex Roberts , he decided to do an  internship in China  for one reason: “To do something outside the box.” “Not being able to find a job I enjoyed in London after graduation I decided to go for it. Also having never lived abroad I wanted to experience a different environment. And Beijing certainly is that !” Beijing , he says, certainly didn’t fit the notion he previously had of the city. “I was sort of expecting to see squatting toilets and run down old buildings everywhere, true communist style. Yet Beijing is the opposite, in many ways more modern than what I was used to in London .” If you follow our blog regularly, you’ll recall that Alex in July debated with the deputy chairman of the People’s Bank of China over the country’s currency, the Renminbi. “I learned about one of the key issues affecting China and the...

Intern Update: Nick Freer-Smith

Nick Freer Smith
Nick Freer-Smith has arrived in China! Last month , the London-native was gearing up for his internship in Shanghai at China BlueSky Ventures , and now he’s beginning to call Shanghai home – at least for the duration of his internship ! “ It's certainly different to what I'm used to, but now that I've settled in I'm delighted to be here . “It's not as hot as I thought it might be so far – in fact, there has been rain and storms instead. The size of the city was something I had never seen before, so I felt a little intimidated at first, especially as I speak no Chinese, however now I'm starting to work out where everything is I'm much happier, and luckily most people speak a little English.” Nick Freer Smith Before coming to Shanghai, China’s hip-and-happening financial capital, Nick was living in the English countryside....

Getin2China and Southern Methodist University Partnership: New Ways to Experience China

Originally published in February, 2011 In early 2011, Get in2 China Group established a partnership with Southern Methodist University (SMU), located in Dallas, Texas, USA. Through this partnership, 20 students from SMU were able to visit China while on their summer break. Participating in a 3-week long program, the students had the opportunity to get both professional and cultural experience while participating in an internship with a company in Beijing. For most of the students this was their first time in China and undoubtedly one of the most unique experiences they ever had. According to the students themselves, the China Internship Program benefited them in several different ways. First, from the professional point of view, working for a Chinese company enabled them to learn first-hand about the peculiarities of doing business in China. In the light of China’s rapid economic growth and its increasing role in global affairs this knowledge...
