Gi2C China intern update: Natalia Rastorgueva

b2ap3_thumbnail_screen-shot-2013-11-30-at-12-51-57-pm.pngWe recently checked in with Natalia to see how her China internship was going. Here’s what she had to say: I’m working at a Chinese law firm and sometimes it can be difficult as some of my colleagues don’t speak Russian or Chinese; therefore, I do most of my work in English such as looking for some information about laws in Russia, translate it in English, explaining some rules about Russian legislation, international contracts, etc. I’ve so far learned about working with people from different countries and English speaking Chinese people, how to deal with international contracts, the differences between Chinese and Russian legislations, and have improved my English speaking and listening skills. Most surprising so far was that I expected Chinese people to speak English very well (which is not quite reality!) and they constantly say “Sorry!” for any misunderstandings we have. But we eventually understand each other just fine....

Get in2 China: July Intern Orientation

A fresh batch of interns arrived for orientation at the Get in2 China offices in Beijing on a hot and sticky Friday afternoon in the middle of July. Most of the interns attending the orientation had been in Beijing for less than a week and it was clear that they were still adjusting to life in China. Just like the interns who attended our June Orientation, the July interns were a friendly, open-minded, hard working group of motivated individuals, ready to take on the challenge of living and working in the world's most populous country. Eleven newcomers from a host of different countries including the U.K., Canada, Sweden, Spain, South Korea, France, Italy, and the U.S., joined us at our Dongzhimen office where the staff at Get in2 China briefed them on what to expect and how to succeed during this enriching experience. Vivi, our Internship Program Coordinatior, started things off...

Internship Placements: Sebastian Armstrong (Winchester, UK)

Sebastian Armstrong had only been in Beijing for just over 24 hours when he arrived at the Get in2 China office for his internship placement. The towering 21-year old from Winchester, UK was battling jet-lag, fatigue, and the general sense of confusion that accompanies all interns first few days in this chaotic city. Still, he looked ready to go. As a Masters Student pursuing an advanced degree in Maths from a little University called Cambridge (you may have heard of it), Sebastian's impressive credentials allowed him to participate in a highly focused technical internship in the Finance and Investment fields. When asked to describe his impression of Beijing in one word as we shuffled into an overcrowded subway car en route to meet with the company he would be placed in, Sebastian responded, "vibrant." When asked what he ate for dinner last night - his first night in Beijing - Sebastian...

Intern Updates: T'ai Chi at Ritan Park (Beijing)

Beijing is a city characterized by a somewhat constant state of confusion and contradiction. Living is Beijing, you often feel as if you are continuously straddling two different worlds. One world is a city undergoing full-throttle modernization, the other is still trying to honor the  foundation of the capital's past, one built on centuries of history and tradition. The swirling of the past, present, and future - that is what Beijing is about. And though you are able to take a world-class subway system to work and pick-up a Starbucks coffee on your way into the office, there are certain parts of life in Beijing that serve as a reminder that the city is a crucible of Chinese culture, and that even as much of the city transforms, certain traditions carry on. One of these notable customs is the practice of T'ai Chi. Head to one of Beijing's many parks during...

Get in2 China: June Intern Orientation

On June 8, 2012, Get in2 China welcomed a fresh batch of wide-eyed interns into our Dongzhimen office in Beijing for their Internship Orientation Meeting. About twelve interns joined us on that Friday afternoon, some of them having arrived in China only a few hours earlier! This month we are fortunate enough to provide placement for interns from countries such as the U.S., Spain, Ukraine, England, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Sweden.  We gathered the group in a conference room for a meet and greet as well as a brief introduction to China. Vivi, our Internship Program Coordinatior, started things off by presenting a number of facts about Beijing, highlighting major attractions and statistics.  Did you know that Beijing has a population of more than 19.6 million people?  That's more than twice the size of the population in New York City. After Vivi provided the historical and cultural introduction to...
