Gi2C Intern Ying’s PR Internship in China

b2ap3_thumbnail_image1_20150818-114934_1.jpeg I was born in Fujian, China, grew up there until age 17, and then I moved to New York City, US. I think the unique part of New York, for me, is the diversity and open-minded mentality. Since there is a large population of people from all over the world that are living in the city, I can feel a cultural mixing everywhere, and people easily accept other cultures. I was always involved in many city events, such as marathons, volunteering, various festivals, and no matter where I went, I could always find out something new about other cultures. I’m currently 24. I enjoy volunteering very much. I learn, care and share through volunteering. This year from February to May, I participated in an environmental sustainability program, and I gained knowledge about recycling, organic farming and forest protection. I hope I could have more time to continuously volunteer during my...

Gi2C Intern Zuhaib’s China Architecture Internship

b2ap3_thumbnail_image1_20150721-112112_1.jpeg I am from Huddersfield Town in the Yorkshire & Humberside region of the United Kingdom. What makes Huddersfield so unique is that it is the largest town in the UK; it is a small town where everyone is united and kind to one another. Even though it is a small town, you can find something that fascinates you every day. I am 20 years old and so far there have been many exciting things that I have done in my life but the top of the list would have to be fighting cancer and winning. Currently, I have completed my second year of Architecture/Architecture International. In school, I was always passionate about art and architecture and I have always excelled in the field of art. I was the first in West Yorkshire and possibly the UK to be awarded the Young Creative Entrepreneur title with my own art business. Studying...

Gi2C Internship Review: Amy’s Interior Design Internship in China

b2ap3_thumbnail_image1_20150623-111751_1.jpeg I grew up in Australia, specifically Adelaide which is the wine capital of Australia. One unique thing about Australia is that our holiday season (Xmas and New Year) is always the hottest time of year. I’m currently 26 and something fun I’ve done so far in my life is to be part of the 2012 Olympics in London. I majored in Interior Decoration and Design in school. I chose that degree because I wanted to do something I enjoy and get paid for it. I’m excited to work for a firm that I can learn from and grow with – a firm interested in design and the people they design for. For my China internship, the company I am interning at is focused on retail design. I will be primarily drawing and handling paperwork. What I want most out of my internship is to learn and to have fun. I...

To Gi2C: This program has changed my life forever.

b2ap3_thumbnail_10290626_10203906417241716_6394170953806264268_n.jpg To the Chinese Workforce: I have never worked so hard with such tight deadlines in my life. Because of you, I have a different standard for working when I come back to America. I am not at all saying that Americans are lazy, I am just saying that we do not work as hard/much nor get paid as little.   To the other foreigners in China: Thank you for making the culture shock a bit easier. I have such a sense of joy being around people of different nationalities. I have gained culture from you all as well. Just to name a few of my favorites, Bahar (Turkey), Racheal (England) , Micheal (American), Vitaly (Ukraininan and I hate you still haha), Winnie (Chinese), Mitch (Austrailian), Matt (English), Victor (Spanish) and AnnaBelle (Dutch) these plus the many more that I have met and became the best of friends the same night....

Gi2C Review: New Intern Vittorio begins his Gi2C China Internship

b2ap3_thumbnail_image1_20150611-101935_1.jpeg Born in Avellino, Italy, I moved to Scotland at the age of 19 after completing high school to pursue my ambition of becoming proficient in the English language while living in a country whose history and heritage had always fascinated me. Gi2C comment: Congrats on achieving your goal, Vittorio! Your English is excellent. I am 24 years old and a few years ago, I met a group of people working for a charity that operates in Cuzco. I became involved in their activities, mainly producing crafts to be sold in markets in Italy, the revenues of which went to children in rural areas of the Peruvian Andes.  I then decided to travel to Peru and I was able to continue my charity work once I got to Cuzco, where I taught English to schoolchildren every afternoon for a month. Living in Aberdeen, the oil capital of Europe and being exposed...

Jana’s Gi2C Internship in Shanghai, China

b2ap3_thumbnail_jana00.jpgMy hometown is Bratislava, Slovakia. Bratislava is the capital of a small country in the middle of Europe with rich history and customs. People there are friendly and caring. I’m 25 and have been involved in sports my whole life. I played basketball for 10 years and also took karate. I’m now playing a sport called floorball. I studied international finance management in Slovakia and Germany. I just graduated in February of this year. I chose to study this area because I wanted to know about finance and management and this major was a great opportunity to study both. My Gi2C arranged China internship is working for a company that focuses on finance, tax, accounting, financial counseling and auditing. The company’s service portfolio is huge, but I should be concentrating on primarily taxes and accounting. I’m looking forward to learning other areas during my internship as well. I want to get...

Gi2C Review of the Best Five Restaurants around the East Third Ring of Beijing

b2ap3_thumbnail_quanjude-6.jpg Beijing is one of the greatest places to live if you’re into food. The authentic Chinese food in Beijing is delicious and extremely diverse, and you also have a multitude of international restaurants to choose from as well!  If you’ve just arrived in Beijing for your Gi2C internship and live relatively close to the second and third ring roads on the east side of downtown Beijing, you will want to experience the following five eateries for yourself:   1. Makye Ame Tibetan Restaurant 玛吉阿米 - 团结湖 Makye Ame has excellent Tibetan food as well as dinner entertainment.  The restaurant is very hard to find so make sure you find it on a map first and have the address in Chinese with you to show local residents if you get lost. Dinner for two is not cheap at around 500rmb (US$80) for four dishes but the Tibetan dancing and singing, which...

Rafael from Brazil about his Gi2C Internship

b2ap3_thumbnail_image1_20150512-055104_1.jpeg I’m from Belo Horizonte, Brazil.  One unique thing about Brazil is the great weather during the entire year and also the kind way that people treat each other, especially foreigners.  I’m 22 and have lived in Canada during high school and France for one semester during university. I studied International Affairs in Brazil and chose this area due to my huge interest in other cultures and passion to go abroad. I will be interning at a pharmaceutical company which operates mostly in developing countries. Their main products are vaccines and medicines.  They are currently looking for partners around the world and working with local governments. I will be focused on export documentation and international marketing tasks such as finding new markets and making sure the products are in accordance with local laws.  My goal for this internship is to gain more experience in international trade and increase my network and...

New Gi2C Intern Review: Shanen from Indonesia starts Interning in China

b2ap3_thumbnail_image1_20150423-061313_1.jpeg I’m originally from Indonesia, but I went to a Canadian university in Toronto. Something unique about Toronto would be its harsh icy winter that can get as low as –38 degrees Celsius! I am 20 years old, going on 21 this year. I’ve lived half of my life all by myself studying abroad in Singapore and Canada, so I’ve been exposed to different cultures and all sorts of languages! That being said, it has made me more flexible and easily adaptable which is always a bonus when working abroad in a totally new place, which in my case, is China. I studied Finance in Toronto and I find that it’s such a fun and dynamic subject of studies and we just suit each other. I am interning at an investment and financial advisory firm that focuses on AU, NZ and China business relationships such as investments, market entry, etc. The...

b2ap3_thumbnail_image1_20150414-080611_1.png I'm from Kirovograd; it's in the Ukraine. It is a nice place to grow up because it's really unique, safe and has a clean environment and beautiful parks. It also has charming historical buildings, great masterpieces of architecture, and the first Ukrainian professional theater.  I'm 21 years old and every minute of my life, I try to do interesting and colorful things. I am an open person and up for any challenge, physically or mentally. I am good at tennis because I started my tennis career when I was a child. I also like snowboarding.  I studied in Barcelona, Spain and London, England. My majors were marketing communication, digital marketing and PR. I have chosen these areas because they are fast developing and require new, innovative thinking every day. In these fields, there are always more things to learn and techniques to practice. I am interning at an international operating...

China Intern Review: Nadia Kerelenko

b2ap3_thumbnail_image002_20140306-093137_1.jpgNewly arrived intern, Nadia, came all the way from Buenos Aires, Argentina to start her new adventure in China. She is 27 and graduated in International Business. Nadia’s internship is at a chamber of commerce and industry and she will be focusing on market research and contacting both foreign and local customers. When we asked what she was hoping to get out of her internship she replied, “I expect to learn the Chinese business culture because the way that Chinese think is totally different compared with westerners. Nowadays many of the most important companies in the world are from China or focusing on China. One day it’s likely that your manager will be Chinese or have a Chinese background and connected in some way to this country.” With one out of every 5 people being Chinese, Nadia is right on the mark. Nadia went on to say that she “chose China...

China Intern Testimonial: Josh Seerattan from Canada

b2ap3_thumbnail_image002.jpg Josh has recently arrived in China from the fine city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He is 30 years old and studied international business, corporate social responsibility, and Spanish when he was in school. He will be interning with a public relations company in Shanghai and is not exactly sure all the details of his job but is looking forward to gaining marketable experience and contacts in the industry. He'll also be using the time to decide if he should remain in China after his internship or look for future entrepreneurial ventures in other parts of the globe. Josh was interested in a China internship because he studied international business and thus wanted to launch his career in a city that is a hub for global business. "I figured if in the event there are no opportunities career-wise for me in China, I will at the very least be able to...

Gi2C China intern update: Natalia Rastorgueva

b2ap3_thumbnail_screen-shot-2013-11-30-at-12-51-57-pm.pngWe recently checked in with Natalia to see how her China internship was going. Here’s what she had to say: I’m working at a Chinese law firm and sometimes it can be difficult as some of my colleagues don’t speak Russian or Chinese; therefore, I do most of my work in English such as looking for some information about laws in Russia, translate it in English, explaining some rules about Russian legislation, international contracts, etc. I’ve so far learned about working with people from different countries and English speaking Chinese people, how to deal with international contracts, the differences between Chinese and Russian legislations, and have improved my English speaking and listening skills. Most surprising so far was that I expected Chinese people to speak English very well (which is not quite reality!) and they constantly say “Sorry!” for any misunderstandings we have. But we eventually understand each other just fine....

b2ap3_thumbnail_screen-shot-2014-01-18-at-8-42-39-pm.pngNewly arrived Gi2C intern, Jamie, is 26 years old and hails from Hull, England. He studied Fine Arts at Chester University and will be starting his China internship at a gallery in Beijing. He selected the Art Industry in order to learn more about creating and advertising art exhibitions and also to put his education to good use. Jamie told us, “My hope is to further understand the field I will be working in, with an aim to full time employment. This Beijing internship will enhance my chances of further employment.”   Of all the places in the world to do an internship, Jamie chose China because the art scene is on the rise and expected to keep growing in the future. He thought it would be beneficial to have his foot in the door early on. He doesn’t have any preconceived notions of China but lives by the mantra “be...
