Before applying for a job, do these 5 things

What to do before applying for a jobNever apply for a job without making sure your online presence is as ready to interview as you are. Employers will look at the online version of you before they invite the in-person version to an interview, so make sure what they see helps solidify their impression of you as a candidate. In China, both local and international companies use a virtual private network, or VPN, to access blocked websites like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter to look up your cyberspace presence. Don’t think for a second your online version created at home won’t be reviewed if you’re looking for an internship in China or work inside the Middle Kingdom – it definitely will be. Here are five things you must do before applying for a job. 1. Update Your LinkedIn Profile If you haven’t revised your LinkedIn profile since your last job, it’s time to make some updates. Rewrite your summary to include your current career objective,...

Intern Testimonial: Nick Freer-Smith

One of China’s great advantages is its openness to foreign people and ideas. Even if you lack the education and experience of a particularly job field, many domestic and international firms are willing to take a chance with an intern who has a different background. For example, it isn’t uncommon for us at Gi2C to place an intern with a legal or social science background in an art gallery if that’s what the intern would like – and the gallery is willing. Twenty-year-old Nick Freer-Smith from London is another example. Although he studied History at the University of Exeter, he’ll do his internship in Shanghai next month at China BlueSky Ventures, an investment and advisory services firm. Nick Freer-Smith “From the Skype interview I've had with the company, I believe I'll be meeting international clients of the firm, and helping them to enter Chinese markets, predominantly in the field of technology,” says Nick....

"Go East, Young Man"

goeastyoungmanChina Daily, an English language newspaper in China, recently featured an article from Erik Nilsson and Thomas Hale titled, "Go Easy, Young Man." China Daily - "Go East, Young Man" The article, published nearly one year after  the New York Times published an identically titled article, discusses the growing trend of young Westerners heading to China for adventure and opportunity. As the article quips, "They come for the adventure. They stay for the jobs." Human Resource professionals agree that gaining work experience in China is a smart tactic for Westerners. Professional work experience in China may prove not only meaningful but also marketable when you return home. The China Daily article featured stories from a handful of young professionals living and working in China, lured to the East by a promising economic environment and a sense of mysticism. This is certainly not the first time in history that young people have been drawn to economically prosperous regions, in-fact it happens...

On Tour: UC Santa Cruz (Go Banana Slugs!)

October 5th, 2012: UC Santa Cruz Fall Study Abroad Fair Leading up to this event, we had heard rumors that the campus of UC Santa Cruz is actually located inside a Redwood Forest. When we arrived on campus, not only were the rumors confirmed, but we also found UC Santa Cruz to be a favorite in the nation's 'Best College Mascot/Team Name' Contest... University of California at Santa Cruz Banana Slugs. Roshni, Yuri, and Ben approvingly bought t-shirts from the bookstore to blend in with the other Banana Slugs. So I knew that we would have an interesting day, but never did a imagine that the Student Union would resemble a log cabin. The city of Santa Cruz is known for having laid-back, even slightly eccentric, locals. It is also known for being a gorgeous, and fun, coastal beach town. Redwood forests colliding with coastal beaches, the students at UCSC have...

As not only China's financial capital, but also a global hub of business and commerce, Shanghai offers a wealth of meaningful internship opportunities for hard working students and graduates. If Shanghai's Pudong Skyline isn't a testament to progress and the result of ambition, we don't know what is! The new office is located in Shanghai's Pudong District, a short walk from the Longyang Road Metro Station. Longyang is known for being the arrival point of the famously fast mag-lev train that shuttles to and from the Pudong Airport. With a top operational speed of 431 kilometers per hour, the magnetic levitation train travels faster than any...
