b2ap3_thumbnail_image001_20150113-075820_1.jpg
Tahnoon grew up in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. Along with China, this Middle Eastern country has also developed a great deal in a short period of time. Tahnoon told us, “The country was changing so fast that it felt like it was growing up with me.” In only 22 years, Tahnoon has learned English, Bengali, and Hindi along with “slightly broken French and a bit of Arabic”. He studied Business and Economics in London since his friends and brother were also there. So what brought him to China? Tahnoon chose China because “China is leading the world in terms of finance and has recently overtaken the U.S. as the world’s largest economy (in terms of PPP ). Experience from China would be invaluable for the start of any career. Also, China is a beautiful country, I hear.” He learned a little bit about China ahead of time from other friends who...

b2ap3_thumbnail_image002_20141212-064404_1.jpg
Michael is from Copenhagen, Denmark, which is unique for its paid education, snowy winter, and the Little Mermaid in Tivoli . Those of us with school loans are suddenly thinking about moving to Denmark, right? Some interesting things he has done in the past 26 years have been sky diving, bungee jumping, and getting a master’s degree in Sydney, Australia. Michael is clearly not afraid of trying new things and adventure! Those two qualities are exactly what all new visitors to China need to have. He has a bachelor’s in Business Engineering and undertook an MBA to challenge himself and learn English. Michael is interning in the consulting industry in Shanghai  and hopes to learn as much as possible about working in a professional company as well as working in a different country and culture. My interior design internship in Beijing - Aishah

b2ap3_thumbnail_image002_20141120-101943_1.jpg
Aishah started her interior design  internship in Beijing this month and ironically comes to a country infamous for tea from a county infamous for the same. I am from a town called Harrogate; it is situated near Leeds and York in England. An interesting story about my town involves a nearby bridge, which has collapsed twice. It has been predicted that the third time it collapses, it will be the end of the world. Harrogate is located inside a county called Yorkshire, which is famous for its Yorkshire tea. I am 26 years old and I have flown an aeroplane a few times during my time at Air Cadets. I studied Interior Architectural Design and Applied Creative Design last year. I chose this area because I have always been slightly artistic and have always liked decorating and designing interior spaces. I am interning at an interior design company based in...

China internship discussion with Naomi B.

b2ap3_thumbnail_image001_20141107-102750_1.jpg
We love hearing personal stories from new interns about their background and why they chose to intern in China! Let’s see what Naomi has to say about her current one-month internship in Beijing. I am 22 and from Nottingham, England. An interesting fact about Nottingham is that it was home to the legend Robin Hood. I have just completed my studies to become a Barrister [lawyer] in the U.K. I undertook my LLB Law Degree at the University of Lincoln and I went on to study the Bar Professional Training Course at Nottingham Trent University. I have always been interested in helping others and I believe a career in the legal profession would enable me to do that. I like meeting new people and problem solving and these are all things the legal profession has given me the opportunity to do. I have just started my internship at a law...

Why I’m returning for a second time to work in China - by Serge M.

b2ap3_thumbnail_image001_20141030-071730_1.jpg
I live in Birmingham, United Kingdom but I grew up in Brazzaville, which is the capital and the largest city of the Republic of the Congo. It is a small country in central Africa with a population of 3.5 million. Something unique about where I grew up is that my dad used to take me and my brothers fishing every Sunday. So until now, fishing has been my second passion after football and I have always supported Arsenal Football Club since I was a kid. But I moved to Shanghai in 1995 when I was 23 years old to pursue my post-graduate studies, so it's been over 19 years since I left Africa. Brazzaville is a big city with 800,000 inhabitants and I still have good friends and good memories there. I am 42 years old and I love travelling. I have been to many countries of the world. Actually,...

My Internship In Beijing with Gi2C – Shauni L.

b2ap3_thumbnail_image001_20141029-112211_1.png
Twenty-two year old Shauni is from a small town in the southern part of the Netherlands, which she told us was “a great place to grow up!” However, she has had the travel bug since college when she studied Science of Tourism, which she chose because traveling is such a big passion of hers. Shauni said “It would be great if I could make this hobby [of traveling] part of my profession! One of the most exciting things I’ve done in my life was an international field project in Thailand. I did research about sustainability in the dive industry for my study.” Shauni also volunteered in Swaziland. With already having such exciting experiences under her belt, no wonder Shauni was looking forward to her next new opportunity abroad! Shauni chose to do her Gi2C internship  with a Beijing travel company, which markets US destinations to Chinese travelers. A job that...

Why China for a Business Internship?

b2ap3_thumbnail_image001_20141015-134152_1.jpg
I am 25 years old from San Francisco, California. Something unique about the growing up in San Francisco is that I was constantly surrounded by people from many different cultures. This helped me get used to cultures different from my own. Being a youth leader at my church since the age of 17 helped me learn other useful business skills such as patience and how to manage groups of people. I studied at San Francisco State University and graduated from there with a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in International Business. I chose this area because learning about different cultures and how to work in different countries was an idea that excited me. I will be interning at an international finance company located in Beijing. I will be working in sales, developing and communicating with people in the US. We will also assist customers through phone, email or...

5 Ways to Guarantee Success on the Job

b2ap3_thumbnail_image001_20141013-064448_1.png
Regardless if you are just starting your career, beginning an internship  or still in university, now is the time to ponder what you want to do for the rest of your life in terms of a career. We recently sat down with an owner and CEO who has been running his company successfully for 15 years to get his advice on how to have a successful career. 1. Love what you do It might not always be possible to love your job but you should know early on what it is that you truly love to do and be moving towards that goal. If you are impatient, like I was, about achieving that goal only after years and years of working slowly up the ladder, then start your own company. Loving what you do will get you through the inevitable tough times that we all face in our career.  ...

Gavin’s Finance Internship In Beijing, China

b2ap3_thumbnail_image001_20140929-130436_1.jpg
Gavin R. was born in a small town in Northern Ireland called Holywood. He just so happen to go to primary and secondary school with the world’s number one golfer, Rory McIlroy, so his claim to fame is playing golf on the same course as Rory! Tell us a little about yourself, Gavin. “I am 21 years old and recently I took part in a charity hitchhike with my university from Durham in the North of England to Amsterdam in Holland. I was in a team of three and we managed to hitch hike in people’s cars the whole way there for free in less than 30 hours. We were the quickest team and one of the only teams to spend no money on travel so it was a huge success and a lot of fun. I am currently studying Economics in the UK. I am entering my third and...

My Beijing Internship Experience with Gi2C

b2ap3_thumbnail_image001_20140926-091620_1.png
Tamara is beginning her Gi2C China internship program  in Beijing and we had the pleasure of hearing her story.   I grew up in a small town pretty much in the countryside. The closest large, well-known city is Zurich, which is about 30 minutes away. Switzerland is infamous for our cheese and chocolate and I guess that's what foreign people identify Switzerland with and of course having great banks! I am 22 years old and something interesting about myself is that I have won the Swiss championship in Badminton when I was 13. Other than badminton, I also love travelling a lot. I am currently working on my Bachelor's degree in Business Communications. I chose to study this field because I like to learn languages and I think one of the most essential departments in an industry is the communications department as it represents the company. I will be working...

My China Internship Experience - Christian W.

b2ap3_thumbnail_Christian-W.jpg
Christian has just completed his two-month Gi2C internship in the communications industry. His job was to assist in the production of design and branding for the company and clients. One thing about his internship that he was surprised by was the amount of responsibility he was given from the onset. However, this trust kept him motivated to succeed and to increase his professionalism. During his internship, Christian learned how to harness his creativity and passion and his organizational ability to create a powerful approach of satisfying both clients needs and time constraints. Christian said, “While working in a Chinese environment, I learned that the eastern approach to design must be understood before incorporating western styles of design.” His biggest challenge during the internship was a technical one. “As I am a Macbook user with my main input and output being Adobe software, PPT was something I always dreaded and had...

Yessenia’s family hails from Carazo, Nicaragua. She told us that the thing she enjoys most about her hometown is nature and the beautiful environment. Yessenia moved to California to study Business and recently graduated from San Francisco State University with a degree in Business Administration, with a concentration in Marketing. She chose to study in San Francisco because it is where she was born, and she loves the city! Five tips for a successful career

b2ap3_thumbnail_image001_20140911-070027_1.jpg
Whether you’re just beginning your career, starting an internship  or still in school, now is the time to start thinking about what you can do to ensure a successful career. We recently interviewed a CFO to get her advice on the matter. Here are her top five tips: 1. Consistent, on-time arrival Being on time shows people that you respect their time and also reduces stress. If you are consistently on time, people will grow to depend on you and give you additional responsibilities. As you receive more and more responsibility, you will quickly rise to the top. 2. Daily written goals Without goals, you have no roadmap for how to accomplish the company’s strategy or your career objectives. You will get behind on projects and you will quickly lose sight of where you want to go with your career as you try to play catch up with your daily...

How many mooncakes are too many?

b2ap3_thumbnail_image001_20140909-131953_1.png
Happy Mid-Autumn Festival! This very brief holiday occurs during the fall and a full moon marks its arrival. And just what is the best part of this holiday besides getting the day off from work? Mooncakes! Mooncakes  come in all different flavors and if you can’t read the Chinese on the package, it’s an exciting surprise to bite into one and see which kind you received! Below are just a few of the common flavors you might find in any given store during this time of year:   1. Red bean paste – the original flavor, slightly sweet   2. Five kernel and roast pork – mixed nuts such as almonds, sesame seeds, and pumpkin seeds with pork   3. Lotus seed paste – sometimes includes kidney bean paste and/or duck eggs   4. Seafood – salty seaweed and fish   5. Durian – smelly but flavorful   6. Snow...

Meet Annie-Mei from Canberra, Australia – New Gi2C Intern in Beijing 798

b2ap3_thumbnail_image001_20140904-055219_1.jpg
Hi Annie-Mei! Tell us a little about yourself. I live in Canberra, Australia now but growing up I lived on the Gold Coast in Queensland right next to the beach. We used to go surfing in primary school for summer sport because we could walk across the road from school to the beach. I am 22 years old. Some exciting things I’ve done so far in life… I've been to a music festival in Serbia called EXIT, seen an active volcano on the island of Hawaii and was in Barcelona when Spain won the Eurocup final in 2012. I studied a Bachelor of Arts at the Australian National University majoring in Chinese (Mandarin) and Art History. I studied Chinese in high school and decided to continue with it. As for Art History, I came across it by accident when I took an Art History course as an elective. I really...

Intern Final Testimonial – Ben R.

b2ap3_thumbnail_image002_20140722-051616_1.jpg
When we first interviewed Ben 6 months ago , he had just arrived in China and was about to start his internship in the renewable energy industry in Shanghai. For his internship, Ben was responsible for the UK and Irish markets. His role was to develop relationships with companies in these markets as well as support them in their sales and marketing activities. Let’s find out what Ben took away from his time and internship in China. “What surprised me most about the internship was the working conditions. Compared to Europe, they are very poor. We were expected to use our own equipment and a poor connection to the internet made carrying out my duties difficult. However, my internship helped improve my communication skills in both written and spoken format. My teamwork has also improved due to being part of a multinational department. Chinese business culture  is very different from...
