Regardless if you are just starting your career, beginning an internship or still in university, now is the time to ponder what you want to do for the rest of your life in terms of a career. We recently sat down with an owner and CEO who has been running his company successfully for 15 years to get his advice on how to have a successful career.
1. Love what you do
It might not always be possible to love your job but you should know early on what it is that you truly love to do and be moving towards that goal. If you are impatient, like I was, about achieving that goal only after years and years of working slowly up the ladder, then start your own company. Loving what you do will get you through the inevitable tough times that we all face in our career.
2. Put your time in, don’t give up, and persevere
Owning your own company means owning all the problems that come with it! There is no boss to consult, no management staff to carry out the company goals for you and guess what – you can’t just quit when you get tired and stressed out. However, learning to be patient and stick it out usually guarantees success in the long run. Put in your time, work hard and keep the big picture in mind when times get tough.
3. Make connections with influential people
The Chinese have a word for this and it’s called “guanxi”. This concept is paramount to their culture… and in pretty much every culture. If you’re not an extrovert, hire someone who is who can represent the company for you and who will get out and make friendships with people of similar and different backgrounds and walks of life. These contacts are invaluable to your future success as success rarely comes about because of the actions of one person. You are as strong as your network of partners, employees, advisors and associates.
4. Seek out those who will make you better at what you do
One thing I can’t stress enough is having people on your team who are a compliment to your skills. If you’re good at ideas and the big picture, you’d better make darn sure you have someone on your team who is taking care of the details. I also advise having mentors and talking to people who have been where you are and succeeded. Surround yourself with intelligent, positive, and customer-focused people and you’d be surprised at how fast your business will grow.
5. Never stop learning
When you have your own business, you are constantly learning and wearing different hats. You don’t need to be an expert in every area but you do need to be somewhat aware of everything that is going on and how it all works together. In terms of your industry, meet with experts, customers and even competitors to ensure that you are always on top of market sentiment and have a good idea of the pulse of the industry.
