Newly arrived Gi2C intern, Jamie, is 26 years old and hails from Hull, England. He studied Fine Arts at Chester University and will be starting his China internship at a gallery in Beijing. He selected the Art Industry in order to learn more about creating and advertising art exhibitions and also to put his education to good use. Jamie told us, “My hope is to further understand the field I will be working in, with an aim to full time employment. This Beijing internship will enhance my chances of further employment.”
Of all the places in the world to do an internship, Jamie chose China because the art scene is on the rise and expected to keep growing in the future. He thought it would be beneficial to have his foot in the door early on. He doesn’t have any preconceived notions of China but lives by the mantra “be friendly and treat people with respect, and they will treat you with respect”. Good advice! He has an open mind to whatever he is going to experience in the next few months.
Jamie wasn’t sure how to find an internship in China on his own which is why he selected Getin2China to handle everything for him. In preparation of the big move to China, Jamie started on learning the basics of Chinese as well as a map of Beijing and what it’s like to live there. Gi2C tip: Make sure to check out our life in China posts for practical tips. While he won’t be taking Mandarin classes, Jamie plans to study on his own whenever he has the chance. He is also expecting some kind of a culture shock but isn’t too worried about it. “My family were very surprised I wanted to head to China but supportive and helpful. I will miss them.”
