China Intern Testimonial: Ben Ridgway

Gi2C's China Intern Testimonial: Ben RidgwayI am 23 and from Guildford, Surrey in the United Kingdom. I was awarded a BA in Human Geography from the University of Plymouth and then completed a postgraduate marketing qualification from Cambridge marketing college.

I will be working for a market leader in the renewable energy industry based in Shanghai. My responsibilities will be focused around developing their international marketing strategy. Our team will focus on developing and implementing marketing strategies for attractive foreign markets. The company is also looking to use creative channels to generate market demand and expand market share. I am hoping this China internship will develop my interpersonal as well as my marketing skills. I am looking forward to working in a truly international industry in which China is fast becoming a market leader. I am also hoping to develop long-term relationships with my colleagues.

I feel that working in China will help me build a career in my chosen field as it is a cultural and economic power. My perception of China is that it is a very large country with cultural and ethnic diversity, a rich history as well as a prosperous future. I also want to work in a country whose culture is far removed from my own. Chinese history and attitude to life was one of my key reasons in choosing China for my internship. When researching internship placements in China, Gi2C had a large number of sources on their website that legitimised their work, including some English sources. My first contact with the company was professional and answered promptly which led to me making further enquiries. Through every stage of my application the team kept me posted as well as providing me with useful information and assistance whenever I needed it.

From what I understand about the Mandarin language, each word has a variety of possible meanings and is a difficult language to master, although I am looking forward to the challenge.

In terms of heading to the other side of the world, my father was as excited as I was. If he had the opportunity to undertake a challenge such as this when he was younger he would make the same decision as me. My mother on the other hand is apprehensive but looking forward to travelling to China to visit me. I live in a forest with just a few neighbours, although I am looking forward to living in one of the world's largest city, I am sure there will be days that I miss the peace and quiet of my home.
